Bath Budget Guidelines

• What is the scope of your bath project? Will it involve additional bath cabinets? Are you thinking of an addition?
• Are we keeping any existing bath cabinets or vanity tops? Are there any fixtures or other items you enjoy using and want to keep?
• Will you be moving any plumbing to accommodate your new bath cabinets?
• Are the switches and outlets conveniently positioned to avoid installing new wiring?
• Do you need a new floor?

How do I determine what to spend?
How much is enough? Too much? Here are a few guidelines to help you through the process of determining just how much to spend:

Look at Home Prices
Look at home prices around you. Are homes in your area holding their value? Have you noticed any remodeling going on in your neighborhood recently? It is a good bet that a remodeled bathroom filled with new bath cabinets, tops and fixtures will help set your home apart at resale time. Plus, if your neighbors have already remodeled, you may need to just to keep up with the standards of the neighborhood.

How Long Will You Stay?
If you are remodeling for the express purpose of turning your house for resale, you could be a little more conservative – a straight pull and replace of your existing bath cabinets and fixtures will keep the price down and still give you a nice new look. Conversely, if you plan on being in your home for a few years, you may want to go beyond just replacing your bath cabinets and consider some features or even an addition that you will enjoy for yourself.

Financing
If you are considering financing, think in terms of a monthly payment you will be comfortable with. You may want to look at a home equity loan to finance your project. If you are buying a house and know you’ll need to remodel the bathroom, you may be able to incorporate the costs of your new bath cabinets, fixtures and other items right into your mortgage.
