Green is the hot buzzword in every area of our lives and countertops are no exception. Here are some of the exciting eco-friendly options available to you today…
Icestone

This extremely eco-friendly product, made from recycled content, offers a countertop surface with a look and feel similar to quartz tops. Manufactured in Brooklyn, NY means it requires significantly less transportation than its closest cousins (engineered stone & granite), which are shipped from overseas. Additionally, the company works in day-lit facilities to save energy and further reduce its’ carbon footprint. Because of it’s VOC-free, high recycled content and Cradle-to-CradleTM certification, Icestone durable surfaces are ideal for project seeking LEED certification.
Cambria

Cambria is the only quartz product made in the United States, thus reducing its transportation and overall carbon footprint. It is a GREENGUARD certified product, which assures that it has no impact on indoor air quality. Its production, delivery and operations processes have all been carefully designed with the environment in mind. From recycling of water to the use of hybrid delivery vehicles and extensive recycling programs, Cambria is committed to minimizing its’ effect on our world.
Paper-based Tops

Yes Paper! Richlite and Paperstone’s paper-based countertops provide a durable as stone, heat and stain-resistant surface for your kitchen. Used commercially in kitchens for years, these countertops provide both a unique look and sustainable alternative to traditional surfaces.

Richlite is the first company to offer hemp-based countertops, which are both heat and stain resistant. It comes in 6 colors, including sage, slate black and nutmeg.

Paperstone’s original series is made from 50% post consumer waste. Paperstone’s certified series is made from 100% post consumer paper and water based resins, making it an even “greener product” than its original series.

Lyptus

Lyptus offers a beautiful countertop surface made from a fast growing, sustainable resource. It comes from Eucalyptus trees grown on plantations certified by Brazil’s national sustainable forestry standard, CERFLOR as well as the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) an international organization that endorses credible sustainable forestry programs. Eucalyptus trees grow quickly and may be harvested within 14-16 years of planting. Virtually every part of the material is used, covering not only the countertop surface material but also the by-products and residuals that can be used as bio-energy to fuel the mill.
