More than half of the people who own houses are baby boomers (that’s anyone who was born anywhere from 1946 to 1964.) For every day until the year 2030, we will see 10,000 baby boomers hit retirement age.

That means that 10,000 people a day are going to be in the life stage where they’ll spend less time at work than they used to - and consequently, more time at home.

According to a survey by Houzz, the top reason that people are remodeling their master bathroom is that they want it to be more “stylish and beautiful.” This is a fairly blanket term - but it definitely means that people are not happy with the style of their bathrooms. They could be outdated, the owners could change their tastes, or the bathroom could simply not fit the vision they have.

It’s 2019. Move over, millennial pink. The Pantone color of the year is living coral. This vibrant hue is rich and full of life, deeper yet bright than its millennial pink cousin.

But it still remains neutral enough to incorporate into everyday life to add that pop of color. Which is why if you’re faced with a drab kitchen, it’s the ultimate color to infuse some life into the room.

When you think of minimalist style, a lot of things might come to mind. You might be thinking of something that’s not quite your taste because it’s all steel and metal with no decorations. Maybe that is your taste, but you think of weird, modern art and all-white walls.

You might be right, but you might be overthinking it, too. Minimalism is defined as a style that is characterized by simplicity. So when you’re thinking about minimalism, it’s just the simpler, the better. Doesn’t that sound like something you might want in a bathroom? Declutter, pare down, and marvel at how much more minimal and pleasing your bathroom looks.

Your kitchen might have been really cool in the 1970s. But it’s no longer the 1970s. Unfortunately, bold backsplashes, crazy colors, tons of dark wood, and laminate countertops aren’t really all that cool anymore.

When you think of a modern kitchen or bathroom, you might think of clean lines, streamlined appliances, minimal decoration, neutral color tones, and efficiency.

You’d definitely be right if that’s what you think of. But a truly modern space can be even more than this. You’ve got a smart phone in the palm of your hand at all times of the day. Why can’t your kitchen or your bathroom be smart, too?

Categories: Kitchens

Your kitchen is where people gather. It’s where people come to talk about their day, and, most importantly, eat.

Like it or not, your kitchen says a lot about you. Is it saying what you want it to say?

Bring out the color in your kitchen. Maybe it’s already the color scheme you’re going for, and you want to know what image you’re showing off to the world. Or maybe you’re about to find just the color match you’ve always wanted.

What’s a room in your house that gets neglected? Hopefully, you didn’t say all of them. But if you think about it, you might not actually pay much attention to your laundry room.

You do probably spend a lot of time there, though. Maybe your laundry room is near your kitchen. Maybe it’s near your bathroom. Wherever it is, you might think of it as just a place to go get the washing done. It’s time to make it a place you actually want to be because you have to be there one way or another.

Think about your kitchen. Are you always tucking in your elbows and trying to cram your pots and pans into the cupboards? And forget it if two people want to cook in there at the same time. There will really be too many cooks in the kitchen.

It sounds like your kitchen is too small. Well, it’s time for you to renovate. Even a small space can be made into a very workable, luxurious area if you take the time and plan your area out just right. Use every square inch of your house to your advantage so you don’t have to feel squished in your own home anymore.

You spend meaningful time in your kitchen, making meals for you and your family or friends. It’s the hub of your house. And chances are, it could use a little update. The kitchen is the most popular room to renovate. So why not renovate yours?

Before you start getting down to the details let’s talk about the big picture. If you’ve never put a lot of thought into your kitchen, chances are it’s not designed in a particular style.

You do some of your best work in the shower. How often have you been standing there, and thought, wow, that’s the best idea I’ve ever had?

For providing you with all those exceptional shower thoughts and moments, you should give your shower some thanks. Maybe it’s old and outdated. Maybe it’s just time for a change. Maybe you’re unhappy with the style, or never even gave it a second thought.

Your shower should be a relaxing place for you to go, not something you look at and say, “blah.” Ready to get your shower that redesign it really needs?

Categories: Bathrooms, Design Ideas

You’re always stepping all over them. Your kitchen and bathroom floors deserve some respect.

Maybe they’re in dire need of an update. Old, grimy tiles or washed out, warped wood? Yeah, that’s not the stylish look you are going for!  Take that dirty rug off your floor you’ve been using to hide your tiles, and get renovating. You’ll be glad you did.

Your bathroom is called a bathroom. Sounds obvious, right? But how is the actual bath in your bathroom?

If your bath is neglected, you’re not taking full advantage of all your bathroom has to offer. Having a bath can be a luxurious, de-stressing experience. But only if you’re doing it right. Get that brand new bathtub you’ve been dreaming of and take that long relaxing bubble bath.

Step inside your kitchen. If you’re not home picture it in your head. How’s it looking? How does your kitchen make you feel?

If you had a less than a positive answer to those questions, then you probably already know something needs to change. Your kitchen should make you feel warm and relaxed. You should be ready to whip up a dinner or sit with a friend and drink a cup of coffee in comfort.

On average, people spend thirty-seven minutes of their day in the kitchen. If you’re a guy, you spend a little less time. If you’re a girl, you spend almost an hour. And if you’re someone who really, really loves to eat, you probably spend even more time than that.

How long have you had your fridge? The answer is probably: too long. Old refrigerators are often sucking up so much electricity that buying a new one would actually pay for itself by shaving money off your electric bill.

You can be saving a fridge load of money when you swap out your old fridge for a new one, but you can also majorly update the look of your entire kitchen. Your old fridge might be yellowy and outdated, and no one wants that eyesore in their kitchen.

Every project has that one challenge.  Well, if we were lucky there would only be that one challenge.  But you know what I am talking about.  The “what do to with” question that always seems to present itself when remodeling the kitchen, the bathroom or any room in the house. For Jen Denham and her client, the “what do with” question for this bathroom remodeling project had to do with the tub.

If you’re dreaming of designing your bathroom with a spa-like aesthetic, then a wet room is certainly an option worth considering. So, what exactly is a wet room? It’s a bathroom where the shower is open or placed behind a single wall, and the floor space of the shower is leveled with the entire room, with the water draining through an opening infused into the floor.

Along with the kitchen and bedrooms, bathrooms get credit as well for being one of the most-used spaces in a home. Water closets may not be glamorous but their utility is high. That should be just the inspiration you need to create a beautiful new bathroom.

A kitchen remodel may be an exciting prospect, or it may feel littered with landmines. How are you supposed to get what you want without compromising your ability to sell your home later? Is it true that all remodels are basically wasted money, funds you’ll never recoup on the sale of your home? Should you just give up right now, crawl under a rock and stop cooking altogether so that you never have to think about it again?

Redoing a bathroom requires making a thousand decisions, but none is arguably so impactful on the overall effect as tile. It is the foundation on which you walk and the covering that protects your shower. Frequently it also forms part of the wall or a backsplash around the sink. Your tile choices, in other words, have considerable bearing on your washroom’s final look.

As you prepare to design or remodel your bathroom, don’t overlook the importance of saving space. Maximizing your use of the available area isn’t just about convenience; it’s also about safety, as the more room you have to move around and reach things, the less likely you are to strain yourself or fall. Thus by designing in a way that wastes as little space as possible, you make your bathroom more accessible and more secure. The following tips will allow you to do just that, creating a room that is compact, convenient, and uncluttered:

Deciding to do a bathroom remodeling project, let alone any remodeling project, is always a big decision.  Part of that decision involves deciding how big the scope of the project will be. Keeping certain items in a space can save on money and decisions, but can present limits and other challenges when working in the space.  This was exactly the challenge at hand for Jen Denham, Designer for Reico Kitchen & Bath.

Never underestimate the importance of lighting for your kitchen. Whether you’re cooking, eating, cleaning, or organizing, you will need plenty of light in the right places. Otherwise, you risk misplacing key items or leaving crumbs and liquids lying on the counter, where they can attract bugs and germs.

It’s not hard to see why lighting matters. But if you’re like most homeowners, you probably do not fully understand how to illuminate your kitchen effectively. You can only do this if you have three layers of lighting.

Education plays a key role throughout our entire lives. It begins in early childhood and if we embrace it, it stays with us our entire lives. College affords the opportunity to develop a real focus around what we hope to do, want to do and sometimes are even a little afraid to do.

We believe the training pipeline starts early, so we have worked to grow this partnership with Virginia Tech and other schools offering housing and other accredited programs. We can’t hire every intern, and we know that not every intern will come to work for us. Nevertheless, and most importantly, we recognize the greater good and importance of teaching them.

We’re down to the Sweet 16 of NCAA basketball’s March Madness. Every decision, every play, every result hinging on other decisions, plays and results. While many teams are evaluated by their overall depth, it is typically the starting five that sets the tone for the game and the success of the team. When it comes to remodeling, this “starting 5” of projects to consider might surprise you. Some are obvious with perhaps a couple you have not yet considered. And now, Ladies and Gentleman, let’s hear it for our starting 5 remodeling projects for your home...

Close your eyes. Imagine the kitchen you grew up in. The table you ate it. The area your mom cooked, baked and whipped up seemingly magical meals...and similarly dreaded meals (I still don't care for Salisbury steak to this day...). Focus in a little more and picture the countertop. Can you see it? What is that? Plastic? Laminate.

But then a few years ago, another new (sur)face rolled onto the scene.

How much does a kitchen cost? We love that question! It signals the start of what we hope will be a great partnership and relationship that will bring a dream to life, in what is arguably the heart of the home and most important room in the house.

But if not approached thoughtfully, that one simple question can easily go down the wrong path. We want nothing more than to be able to answer that question as quickly as possible, but the truth is that designing a kitchen is a specialized practice.

If there was ever any question who has the best women’s gymnastics team in the world, it was answered with a resounding exclamation point at the Rio Olympics this week by our "Final Five". While the kitchen island has no gold medals to show for all its’ hard work, much like its Olympic counterpart it meets every expectation set for it.

One of the biggest decisions to be made in the kitchen remodeling process is finding the right kitchen cabinets for your new kitchen. Kitchen cabinets often dominate the look and feel of your kitchen, as countertops, appliances, tile backsplashes, hardware seek to complement or gently contrast your kitchen cabinets. But kitchen cabinets offer more than just a look you are going for.

In many ways, kitchen remodeling is its’ own series of events, particularly when it comes to making product selections. Call it your own “remodeling decathlon”. Just like in the Olympic Decathlon, 10 “events” (or products for you kitchen decathletes) must be prepared for and participated in to help you achieve your goal.

Your gold medal result depends on the decisions you make that help shape that dream kitchen. So, what does it take to create your own gold-medal winning dream kitchen? Succeed in the following events and you are well on your way!

There was a time when we just didn’t go for molding. Maybe it was too fancy, or just too extravagant. But not anymore. Today’s consumer understands better than ever how molding connects their cabinetry and all the components of their kitchen into a crisp, well thought out kitchen design.

The truth is, molding is the finishing touch. The cherry on top. The icing on the cake. It ties the design together with lines and details that add accent, purpose and completes the look and feel of the kitchen.

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip, that started on a kitchen island with no features equipped…

Unlike its isolated counterpart, the kitchen island often becomes the central point of a newly redesigned kitchen. And contrary to a deserted island, it is a place where many want to gather to cook, dine, socialize and even get some homework done. With such popularity, it’s no wonder that so much time is spent on designing the right kitchen island as part of the bigger kitchen design.

So how can you avoid getting stranded on your own kitchen island?
