Wounded Warrior Project

Reico Kitchen & Bath Helps Provide Homes for Wounded Soldiers

From the outside, tow homes at Fort Belvoir army base in Virginia appear as any other. Go inside however, and you’ll discover they are far from typical. The concept homes, part of the Wounded Warrior Home Project, were deliberately designed to make life more comfortable and functional for returning military service members dealing with debilitating injuries and accessibility challenges.

When the project’s partners - the Army, Clark Realty Capital, Michael Graves Associates and global design firm IDEO – they enlisted Merillat Cabinetry to lend expertise and provide cabinetry solutions that support the project’s mission. And when it came time to bring the cabinetry designs to life, Merillat looked to Reico Kitchen & Bath to work with the design team on site as well as install the cabinetry – a project Reico was product to be a part of.

As the heart and soul of the home, the kitchen and bathroom are two areas that can be a source of frustration for disabled, aging and injured people. The kitchen and bathroom of the Wounded Warrior Home Project were two spaces given much consideration to. The Merillat cabinetry in these spaces was designed for ease-of-use and accessibility without sacrificing style or storage and includes:

  • Custom removable base cabinets on caster wheels that can be easily removed to accommodate wheel chair access beneath countertops and sinks.
  • Adjustable height countertop surfaces offered by an automatic lift.
  • Large cabinet drawer and door handles that are ergonomically friendly and easier to grasp.
  • In-drawer cutting board kits and roll out trays that help keep must have items within.
