Appliance Basics

Selecting Kitchen Appliances

Selecting kitchen appliances is a critical driver to the kitchen design process. Finding and selecting your kitchen appliances first in the process helps identify space, gas/electrical locations and design requirements to create the right kitchen design for your space.

Appliances are often considered the “jewelry” of the kitchen, adding look, style and performance to your kitchen. The essential kitchen appliances you must consider include:

  • Dishwasher
  • Microwave
  • Refrigerator – Free Standing, Counter Depth or Built-in
  • Range – Free Standing or Slide-in
  • Oven – Single, Double or Microwave Combination
  • Cooktop – Gas, Electric or Induction
  • Ventilation – Hood or Downdraft

Additionally, you may also consider other appliances which while not always needed are sometimes desired. Knowing the options you have will ensure you get everything you need for your new kitchen. These appliances include but are not limited to:

  • Wine Storage
  • Undercounter Refrigerator/Beverage Center
  • Coffee System
  • Warming Drawer
  • Steam Oven

  1. How many are you cooking for? (what appliances are needed)
  2. How many cooks are there? (how many appliances…or work areas are needed?)
  3. How often do you purchase groceries? (impacts refrigerator size/storage capacity)
  4. Is time savings important to you? (impacts the brand/level of performance to consider)
  5. Do you want your appliances to match? (how visible will your appliance be to other areas of the home?)
